Android DNS Setup

System-wide encrypted DNS on supported Android releases

Private DNS

Android 9 and later include Private DNS using DNS over TLS.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Find Private DNS under Network & Internet, Connections, or the equivalent menu used by your device vendor.
  3. Select Private DNS provider hostname.
  4. Enter ledns.eu — a hostname, not an IP address.
  5. Save.

Android authenticates the TLS certificate for that hostname and connects on port 853. If the network blocks DoT, Android can report the network as having no internet rather than silently using an unencrypted resolver.

Older devices or per-network DNS

Per-network DNS fields generally configure unencrypted port-53 DNS. If a device requires changing DHCP to a static address before exposing those fields, preserve the current IP address, prefix length, gateway and search-domain settings. Guessing them can disconnect the device.

Use:

Verify

Reconnect the network and resolve a new hostname. A DNS leak test can reveal whether the ISP resolver is still in use, but provider labels are not authoritative and may show only the hosting network.
